Worried About Bad Reviews?

Hey writers!  T’Gracie and I have noticed that a lot of you are wondering what to do in case your books receive unfavorable, or just flat out unfair, reviews.  Do you respond?

Our answer is no, because fools will be fools and there’s nothing you can do about it.  If you protest, the reviewer is not going to say, “Oh, you’re right, and I was an idiot.”

But you can take heart:  some of the greatest novels of all time received terrible reviews upon publication.  Here are some examples (thanks to an article on The Huffington Post*)

1. To Kill a Mockingbird: “Miss Lee’s problem has been to tell the story she wants to tell and yet to stay within the consciousness of a child, and she hasn’t consistently solved it.” (Saturday Review)

2. The Great Gatsby: “Scott Fitzgerald’s new novel, The Great Gatsby is in form no more than a glorified anecdote, and not too probable at that…” (The Chicago Tribune)

3. For Whom the Bell Tolls: “It is certainly quite a little too long.” (The New Republic)

First, let’s point out that these are such classics, we didn’t even need to tell you the authors, did we?

Next, it is an undeniable fact that each of these books survived and sold quite well even before the age of kindle countdown deals.

Finally, we, too, have had a negative review or two. One, which commented on the number of typos the book had will be the topic of our next blog “Editing in the Age of E-books”

So, remember that you are in good company and keep on writing!
